Essential Oils

Ask Us a question

What is an essential oil?

Essential oils are naturally occurring oils that are derived from plants and can be identified by their strong aromatic qualities. Dating back to ancient times, aromatic plants have been the basis for numerous herbal and botanical remedies in many cultures and are the root of today’s modern medicine.

History

For thousands of years, essential oils have been used in religious observances, ceremonies, food preparation, as perfumes and in beauty-enhancing rituals. Thought to promote spiritual and physical wellbeing, the use of essential oils can be traced back to ancient Egypt, India and China.

It’s uses

Pure essential oils have an extensive range of applications to promote physical and emotional wellness. Our quality essential oils are safe for the whole family and  can be used:

  • Aromatically
  • Applied topically
  • Ingested internally (Selected food grade oils only)

Depending on your desired effect, these naturally fragrant essential oils can stimulate deep emotional responses to help you in your day to day life.

Topical

Topical applications of dōTERRA’s essential oils can have a localized effect on the body. Whether you choose to add a few drops to a warm bath, make a hot or cold compress, or apply directly to various points on the body, pure essential oils offer numerous benefits that target the specific area of application whilst providing whole body support.

Internal

As the most potent method of application, essential oils offer concentrated effects to the body when consumed. A selection of dōTERRA’s pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils can be safely added to water, put in a capsule or have a drop applied under the tongue. Promote internal health and whole body well-being naturally with these powerful and effective essential oils.

How it’s made

The volatile aromatic compounds that make up an essential oil are derived from various parts of plants such as the seeds, stems, barks, flowers, and roots. In order to isolate the essential oils from plant matter, there are two methods of extraction that can be used.

Steam Distillation

In the distillation process, steam from boiling water passes through the plant material which then carries the volatile aromatic compounds from the plant into a tube. The steam in the collection tube is cooled and condensed into water. The oil then separates itself from the water and the essential oil is collected.

Expression

Expression is a method that is used to extract oils from the rind of fruit. This process is used to produce a number of dōTERRA’s citrus oils.

During expression, the fruit is grazed against sharp cylinders that scrape open microscopic sacs, containing essential oils, on the surface of the fruit’s rind. Once these sacs have been grazed open, water is sprayed over the fruit and the essential oil and water mixture is passed through a filter that eliminates any pieces of the fruit’s rind. The water is then separated from the oil and the citrus oil is collected.

Thanks to modern day science and dōTERRA’s advanced testing methods, essential oils by dōTERRA undergo rigorous testing to ensure the highest quality oils are produced each and every time.
